Once again,I'm no expert, but I've been seriously listening to Sinatra for almost 50 years and learn something new here every visit.
Location: Melbourne, Dont Be That Way - Glenn Miller - The Secret Broadcasts (CD). I have to wonder if you're ever going to get genuinely good sound on recordings of that vintage.
In any event, I have the th Anniversary collection released inwhen Miller would have beenand it's a great collection with good-as-can-be-expected sound quality.
Highly recommended if you can find it! Hey Vinyl ManJan 11, For a single disc The Unforgettable Glenn Miller is the best, although you need an early pressing.
Later reissues use NR. Other than that go for The Popular Recordings. It does use NR but is not horrible. JamieCJan 11, BradOlson likes this.
Last edited: Jan 11, This won't replace any of the sets you're asking about, but if you happen to see the four-CD set of the Army Air Force Band at a good price, snap it up. It's gone out of print, and that was a great Miller band. Artie Shaw and Benny Goodman are good go-to's for great playing, craftsmanship within a mainstream context. And Ellington really is the genius he's made out to be.
I found this to be perfect for me: The Essential Glenn Miller Forty-seven tracks, the same number as the other, more recent Essential. AMG says:. BradOlsonJan 11, Location: Washington, DC. When Popular came out, I borrowed it from my library and "studied" it as much for the "metal parts" transfers as anything. I did the standard thing with that library copy, so I never purchased it, but I remember it as a revelation over the murk I already had on RCA LPs and comparing to a couple original 78s I have.
So, here is another vote for Popular, especially at those used prices. Also think about the concept of doing that set: it wasn't "churn out another for the Essential series" and it wasn't "this is the Glenn Miller release for the year, move it out", it was more like "hey we are finally budgeted to do a good reissue right from original metal parts, let's do it! There were also cassette and LP releases. It sounds good enough, not overprocessed.
With this you won't ever worry about missing one RCA studio track or another. But its booklet should be essential. There are some pre-RCA studio cuts not on this. A Dont Be That Way - Glenn Miller - The Secret Broadcasts (CD) one is "The Carnegie Hall Concert" from from RCA, the sound is pretty good and that concert has a different vibe than all the live or prerecorded radio broadcasts. I found this first as a used LP, first issued with murky processed sound, then again as a surprise around new as a reprint RCA budget bin LP on Dynaflex!
So if anyone wants this on LP, make sure it is an orange label Dynaflex! Dont Be That Way - Glenn Miller - The Secret Broadcasts (CD) cover is exactly identical. At the same time and place I found the LP "This is Glenn Miller" with black cover, same new Dynaflex, and it must have been a new remaster, but I did not have that before.
It looks like Wounded Bird label has licensed that for rerelease but that could Dont Be That Way - Glenn Miller - The Secret Broadcasts (CD) sketchy. That should be a consideration or an awareness. Then get Carnegie Hall.
