The atmosphere of Medusa is very stable, sad but quite comfortable at it. I sense deep spirit in peace and serenity of these recordings. Sure, we can't talk of any acoustics here nor magnificent strings arrangements. It is mostly freaking synthesizers.
I know, but still, it is hardly ever that synthesizers can come so alive. Although a completely Album) style of music, Klaus Schultze's Body Love comes to mind.
My favorite songs? It is a very even album but Medusa, Louise, Agonized by Love, Masquerade and Back Door would be my choices and Masquerade makes my list of 25 best songs by female vocalists. It is very special to me. So is this album as you can see. Medusa was released in On the following albums of then Xymox, and then back from the grave Clan Of Xymox, when the thrown away passengers could not be seen in the rear view mirror any more highly immoral if not illegal move I am not going to comment.
His recent Ourspace frommuch lighter in tone is nice and relaxing, with a few moments of time distortion I love so much. Anka's Cocoon Time of has some good songs on it.
Frank Weyzig seems to have been the most prolific. His Born For Bliss albums had some great songs on them and his much more recent Stargazing project was very unusual and interesting. However, I have no doubts at all that the most interesting music coming out of these Dutch musicians in the last 20 years is about to be released either later in or more likely in early Frank's music and arrangements and Carlo's vocal are phenomenal and to me will most likely make it one of the very best albums of I've lost count of the number of times I've played this album over the years.
It amazes me that at the time of writing there is just one other review here on Amazon for this fabulous album! To me, Clan Of Xymox always felt like something of an anomaly within the context of the mid's 4AD stable.
Absolutely none of these bands sounded like Clan Of Xymox. It made one question what had originally prompted Ivo Watts-Russell, the then-owner of 4AD, to sign the band. In fact, it was 'Muscoviet Musquito' which initially turned me on to the band. Album) Of Xymox fitted comfortably alongside these bands within the confines of my stereo - but with the added bonus of extremely high quality artwork, courtesy of Vaughan Oliver. The album itself is certainly going to appeal to fans of 80's goth music - but I've also played the album to friends who are fans of New Order, they absolutely love it too.
Highlights include the excellent 'Michelle', 'Back Door' and 'Louise'. If you've only recently discovered Clan Of Xymox, then both this and their debut album called 'Clan Of Xymox' - also on Album) 4AD label are definitely the place to begin your search.
Following 'Medusa', Xymox attempted a move into pop particularly with their fourth album 'Phoenix'but then lost their way between when they attempted more of a dance direction. Unfortunately, that was a disaster. Xymox then rediscovered their roots for the release 'Hidden Faces', but the production and overall quality of 'Medusa' from far exceeds any of the albums I've heard from Xymox since then. Xymox left 4AD shortly after the release of 'Medusa' and moved to a major label.
Perhaps this move was already on the cards and possibly explains why 4AD chose not to release any singles, however this could in fact be part of the album's charm - outside of Xymox's fanbase, not many people have heard of this album or indeed Clan of Xymoxslightly bizarre for a band who is shortly to release their 19th album in !!
This album is a rare gem. It is more than the sum of it's constituent songs, Album). It hangs together as a single piece of music. It takes you on a journey from the beginning to the end. It is a late night moody mix of Louise - Clan Of Xymox - Medusa (CD electronics. There are strong individual songs in the mix as well. The beautiful instrumental interludes fit perfectly within. But this is not a mushy self indulgent album.
The balance of songs and theme is perfect. An undiscovered, underrated masterpiece. Of course, IMO. One person found this helpful. See all reviews. Customers who bought this item also bought.
